For investor clients, Mike uses creative approaches to increase marketability and cash flow, including sustainable green features and energy and water efficiency improvements. He specializes in the acquisition, leasing and sales of multi-unit properties and has extensive knowledge of San Diego’s best investment opportunities including 2-4 unit properties, small commercial buildings and downtown condos with upside potential. Mike has enjoyed helping many clients with their 1031 exchanges and loves the challenge of working with savvy investors.
Mike is committed not only to the success of his clients, but also to the improvement of the neighborhoods where he lives and works. In 2015, Mike became an accredited LEED Green Associate and NAR Green certified Realtor. Today, he shares this knowledge of sustainability and healthy homes to effect positive "green" improvements through homeowner educational programs. In 2017 he became a member of the US Green Building Council's Residential Committee and helps to organize its annual Green Homes Tour.
Mike is proud to have called San Diego home since 1993 and to have participated in the exciting redevelopment of downtown San Diego's urban communities including Little Italy, Columbia, and East Village districts. He currently resides in North Park and loves spending free days in Balboa Park or the San Diego zoo. His passion for real estate began as a child touring open houses with his family in Santa Barbara, and peaked when he bought his first home in 2000 and spent 2 years renovating the Hillcrest Craftsman bungalow. Prior to 2002, Mike was the founder and president of an international tour company that operated adventure tours to Australia, New Zealand, Fiji, Greece, Holland, and Russia. In 2002, after his first successful renovation and sale of his own home, he decided to leave the tour business and pursue a real estate career.
Mike graduated with degrees in Spanish and geography from Dartmouth College in 1988. After college he studied and lived abroad in Barcelona, London, and Sydney. Today, he uses his fluency in Spanish in real estate. He is an active member of Balboa Park's House of Peru, a country very close to his heart since he married his husband Carlos in 2016. Mike's passion for real estate is matched only by his love of travel. Among his favorite escapes are Maui, Peru, Greece, and Spain, and he is happy to share his travel recommendations with friends and clients.

In both of my passions, Real Estate and Sailing, I have found that I may not be able to control the wind, but I can always adjust the sail, providing maximum and quality teamwork beneficial to all!

Professional focus
I want to assist clients with the most important decisions of their lives by understanding their values and goals. To support buyers and sellers with realistic expectations, create a strategy that resonates with the principles and provide clients with information so they can make an educated decision.
Business philosophy and working style
When someone buys, sells or invest in real estate, the story goes beyond the transaction. It is years of financial planning, memories and pride of the home and is an investment from past generations onto the next. My role is to be the problem solver and to support moving families forward.

Before real estate, I have always had to negotiate. I opened up all the original Hard Rock Restaurants which lead to significant economic expansion. I brought my business acumen from my previous role into my real estate career to service my clients to the highest capacity.
In my spare time I like to get involved in the community- I am a member of a few committees. I also enjoy beach or harbor walks, and spending time with my awesome family.
I believe as humans we can make the world a better place!

As a real estate agent in California, my path to this career has been anything but conventional. My journey has taken me from the kitchens of Kansas City to the vibrant real estate market of California. After graduating with a Culinary Arts Degree from Johnson and Wales in Denver, I embarked on a rewarding journey in the culinary world. I worked my way up to the executive chef, then transitioned into a corporate role, and eventually founded my consultancy firm, RefineUS. This diverse experience has taught me the importance of dedication, adaptability, and client-focused service.
In 2019, I made a significant life change by moving to San Diego. Although I initially continued my work in consultancy, my career took a new direction in 2023., when I entered the real estate industry. This decision was driven by my passion for helping others and my desire to apply my skills in a new arena. Drawing on my experiences in leadership, client service, and strategic planning!
In real estate, I bring my unique background and perspective to the table, offering clients unparalleled service and insight. My approach is grounded in the belief that attention to detail and a deep understanding of client needs are paramount. Whether helping clients find their dream homes or sell their property, I am committed to making the process as smooth and successful as possible.
Living by the philosophy that taking care of the little things leads to achieving bigger goals, I apply this approach in every real estate transaction. Outside of work, I enjoy cooking, staying active through fitness and hiking, and exploring new culinary experiences with my husband (Adam) and our two French bulldogs (Gnocchi & Barolo).

Sold a condo and purchased a condo
I got to know Richard through his wife. I had a realtor at the time who was helping me look for property to purchase while helping me sell. Long story short my realtor was tough to communicate with, tough to get a hold of and basically kept saying "be patient, be patient". I told that other realtor that we weren't working out so I got rid of him. Right at that time met Richard who is a GENIUS!! Right away he showed me properties that I didn't even know were out there?! He drove us around, really took the time, went over all the options and did an amazing job helping me and my wife pick a place that was going to be a great investment and be a great place to live. So, we bought this place, penthouse unit in a smaller building in downtown for a STEAL. Then just 2 weeks later he helped me sell my other condo which actually was in a great area but it just wasn't getting any offers. He had some amazing tricks that I would have never thought of and obviously the other realtor didn't either. The place sold quickly in a not-so-hot market for about a $32,000 profit. And to top it off, we have since sold the penthouse unit and bought another place, again for profit, and all with the help of Richard. Just an amazing person to work with, knowledgeable, not a sales person type, genuine and great with communication.
The Hunter & Maddox team is committed to maintaining the highest standards for excellence and leadership. Our Primary goal is to provide the highest level of service to our clients through integrity.
